Periodontal Treatment in Edmonton

Periodontal Treatment Near You

Gum disease is an extremely common dental issue, impacting a substantial amount of the population here in North America. This condition is characterized by swollen or bleeding gums caused by an infection.

In many cases, patients do not know they have gum disease, as the beginning stage may not cause pain and, therefore, goes undetected. Unfortunately, if it is left to progress, you can run the risk of receding gums and loose teeth.

Our general dentist near you, Dr. Steed, is here to help you regain control of your oral health. If you want to learn more about periodontal disease, don’t wait to contact us. We’ll schedule you for a consultation in no time.

Symptoms

Some warning signs to keep an eye out for are as follows:

  • Halitosis (bad breath)
  • Red, swollen, or bleeding gums
  • Increased tooth sensitivity
  • Receding gums
  • Pus

If you visit a dentist in Edmonton promptly, you can control these symptoms and avoid the need for more serious treatment later.

The Stages of Gum Disease

Stage 1: Gingivitis

Gingivitis is the beginning stage of gum disease. It occurs when there is a buildup of bacteria. If it is not cleared away, the bacteria becomes plaque, a hard, sticky substance that can only be removed by a dentist.

Puffy or dark red gums and bad breath typically occur during this stage.

Many people may not realize they have gingivitis because it isn’t necessarily painful. But this is when you should speak with a dental professional and have them examine your smile. A deep cleaning and practicing good daily hygiene can effectively treat gingivitis.

Stage 2: Periodontitis

Periodontitis is an aggressive stage of the disease. Once the condition reaches this point, it cannot be reversed, only managed. The gums, teeth, and underlying oral structures can all be affected.

Mild (early) periodontitis is when the gums recede and “pockets” form. This leaves room for more bacteria to gather and cause damage to the tooth roots. Moderate periodontitis occurs when the gum infection spreads throughout the mouth. The final and most serious stage of the disease is advanced periodontitis. Teeth can fall out, and abscesses can form.

Available Treatments

The stage of the disease determines the treatment. At Avalon Dental, our team will perform a comprehensive examination of your smile and mouth and take x-rays to assess structures below the surface of the gums. Once this is done, we can recommend the best solution for your case. This can include:

  • Scaling and root planing (deep cleaning)
  • Antibiotics
  • Bone grafting
  • Tissue grafting
  • Flap (pocket reduction) surgery

We may have you return to the clinic so we can monitor your dental health. If you have concerns or require additional means to remain comfortable during your appointment, let us know. Your well-being matters to us at all times.
