Root Canal Treatment Near You
The fleshy mass in the middle of every tooth is known as the pulp. When the pulp is infected or damaged, the tooth itself becomes compromised, and one can experience sensitivity and oral pain. Undergoing endodontic therapy is the best way to remedy this issue and prevent future ones from arising.
If you or a loved one need this procedure, book a consultation with one of our local dentists near you. They can evaluate your smile and let you know if you’re a good candidate.
What is the Pulp?
The pulp is a sac that resides in the pulp chamber, found inside our teeth. Nerves, tissues, and blood vessels all meet within the pulp. Nutrients and minerals are delivered here to keep the tooth functioning. Unfortunately, it is quite delicate and prone to damage, whether from playing sports, decay, or another type of oral trauma.
If the unhealthy pulp is not removed, the tooth itself can die. So, to prevent this, a root canal (endodontic therapy) is necessary. This procedure will also help you avoid needing a tooth extraction.
Our dentist in Southeast Edmonton, Dr. Steed, has much experience performing root canals and will ensure you’re comfortable during the treatment. Please come by Avalon Dental today for an initial consultation.
Signs to Watch For
An unhealthy tooth may not cause any pain at first, but if the decay is deep enough, it can eventually cause several symptoms to arise, such as:
- Constant tooth pain
- Hurts to eat
- Pimple on the gums
- Swollen gums
- The tooth is black
- Pus
- Tooth feels loose
Treatment Steps
A root canal may be completed in 1-2 appointments, depending on the complexity of the case. At our local dental clinic, here is an overview of what you can expect:
- After a consultation with Dr. Steed, which involves evaluating your tooth and taking x-rays, you’ll be given local anesthesia. This medication numbs the area surrounding the unhealthy tooth, preventing you from feeling discomfort while our team works.
- A rubber dam is situated around the tooth to isolate it and keep your neighbouring teeth and gums dry.
- A hole is made in the top of the tooth to access the pulp chamber. Then, using delicate tools, the pulp is removed.
- The now-empty chamber is disinfected and shaped. Gutta-percha, a biocompatible material, fills and seals the chamber. This helps prevent re-infection.
- A temporary dental restoration, usually a crown, is slipped over the treated tooth. A permanent one is made according to your tooth’s dimensions. It is designed from porcelain, so it blends in with your smile.
